Even before the camp started, we ran into various problems. Enoch had an eye infection, and so we had him rest in Taipei while we took Elijah from the South Taichung camp. Luodong High School was in Yilan. We had three classes, English, Drama, and Baking, which were held in the morning. In the afternoon, we held three different workshops, slang/memes, American culture, and relationships/love. We had about 40 kids, which we split into three groups. We were trying to get them to start attending the high school fellowship as well as the local church. The high school students were surprisingly talkative and friendly, and so relationships formed rather quickly. On the first day of camp several members got the opportunity to share their testimonies in the relationship class. We almost blew ourselves up while cooking spaghetti for the kids on the first day, and we made chicken sandwiches on the second day.
The entire time everyone was telling us that there would be a category 5 typhoon hitting Yilan, and that we wouldn’t be able to hold the camp. We prayed, and thanks to God, the typhoon which initially was supposed to directly hit Yilan went South, and barely hit us. On the third day of camp, the government declared a Typhoon day across Taiwan, so we were not allowed to hold the camp at school. We decided to hold the camp at church, and about half of the kids showed up. We held the classes in the morning, and played games and hung out with the kids in the afternoon. We held an evangelical night on the fourth day, where about 30 kids came to the church and heard two of our members share their testimonies.
One of the special things about this location was that we were there for two weeks, the first for the high school and the second for the elementary school. Some of the high school students came helped out with the elementary school camp. It was awesome being able to plant seeds, but in this camp we also got to see the harvest! Two twin brothers, Hank and Jamie, accepted Christ, and decided to help us with the elementary school as small group leaders. They spent all their time with us, coming to the church at 7am and leaving at 10pm. They joined us for our team devotions, joined various team members in their personal devotions, and prayed with us as well. For the others, about 15 of the 40 kids came back the next week for the high school fellowship, and were interested in investigating if Christianity was real or not. It was really encouraging seeing God move in their hearts.
